Barbera d'Alba DOC Barrique
Barbera d’Alba is the most grown vine variety in Piedmont. It is rather productive, but needs optimal vintages and good management of the vineyard for the bunches of grapes to correctly ripen.
Because of its rough character, Barbera is the wine traditionally drunk by our forefathers.
It can age for a few years, but its low tannic content does not make it suitable for long ageing.
Technical Notes
- Typology
- DOC – Denomination of Controlled Origin (part of the European QWPSR standard - Quality Wine Produced in Specified Regions)
- Variety
- Barbera 100%.
- Approximate Alcohol Content
- 13,5%.
- Vinification
- Fermentation in stainless steel, one-week maceration at relatively high temperatures in order to maximize the extraction of polyphenols. Fining takes at least 6 months and up to one year, occurring in “barrique” (oak barrels holding 225 liters). At the end of this period the process of vinification concludes with bottling.
- Organoleptic Profile
- Barbera is a robust wine, very rich and flavourful to the taste. It has a deep claret colour which tends to fade away with fining. The typical style of Barbera has a bouquet of red fruits, often cooked as in jam. Fining in wood endows it with longer longevity in time and enriches it with those fragrances which are typical of barrique toasting – roasting aromas such as coffee, vanilla and chocolate.
